A Place in Desperate Need of Renovation

Novel Timeline

A Star Trek Novel Timeline

by Andrew Timson

This timeline was derived solely from the episodes themselves (using the DVD order as their “proper” order, being production order for Star Trek and air order for the other series), information from the novels proper, or from the authors themselves on the Psi Phi message board, or the TrekBBS. While the series-specific timelines in Tales of the Dominion War and Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume Three (among others) were used, the attempt at an all-encompassing one found in What Lay Beyond among other was not considered due to its inaccuracies (including, but not limited to, not considering other books when placing titles on the list).

For books with jumps in time, there are essentially three ways of this occurring. The first is where the stories are discrete entities, as in The Badlands and The Brave and the Bold; in those cases, each segment is considered separately. The second is through a framing story, such as The Lives of Dax or Foundations; these stories are considered as happening at the time of the frame. Third is a case of a prelude section that’s separated by time, as in Red Sector or In the Name of Honor; these are placed by the “main” section of the book, generally with additional notes about the prelude.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me.

The following list of titles belong on this list; however, I do not have them handy and thus can’t list them at the moment.

  • The Next Generation #53: Double Helix #3—Red Sector
  • The Captain’s Table #4: Fire Ship
(After Kes’s departure. Probably late season four.)
  • Star Trek: The Amazing Stories
  • The Next Generation: Perchance to Dream by Keith R.A. DeCandido
(Referenced by “Oil and Water” and A Time for War….)
  • New Frontier: No Limits
    “I have always been here…”

  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Tending Bar…” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
(Because this framing story is completely undatable, I chose to make an exception to my usual rule and place the stories in their respective locations in the timeline.)
    1776

  • 11 October—Enterprise Logs: “The Veil at Valcour” by Diane Carey
    1942

  • 26 October—Enterprise Logs: “World of Strangers” by Diane Carey
    1969

  • July—Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Volume III—“The Aliens are Coming!” by Dayton Ward
(Referenced by The Eugenics Wars #2.)
    2151

  • The Brave and the Bold: “Prelude: Discovery” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
  • Enterprise: “Breaking the Ice”
    2152

  • Enterprise #215: “Cease Fire”
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Have Beagle, Will Travel: The Legend of Porthos” by Louisa M. Swann
    2238

  • Sunday, 12 August—Enterprise: Last Full Measure by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels
(Though no link between the Enterprise “relaunch” and the other books has yet been established, it seems fair to assume that they’ll probably be linked as the Voyager relaunch was.
    2246

  • 10-12 October—Enterprise Logs: “Though Hell Should Bar the Way”
    2254

  • Enterprise Logs: “Conflicting Natures”
    2265

  • Star Trek: Enterprise—The First Adventure by Vonda N. McIntyre
  • Star Trek: “Where No Man Has Gone Before”
  • 1313.8—Star Trek: My Brother’s Keeper, Book One: Republic
(A race originating in this book later appeared in Maker. Also, Spock’s statement concerning how long he served with Gary Mitchell is impossible if we accept the 2265 figure for Harbinger; it would have to be along the lines of thirteen weeks, one point two days, not thirteen months, twelve days.)
  • Vanguard #1: Harbinger by David Mack
(Even though the Enterprise could likely have waited until its arrival at Starbase 33 to effect repairs, given that Starbase 47 was closer and also intrigued both Kirk and Spock it makes sense that they chose to divert there. Spoilers for this book and My Brother’s Keeper follow, highlight to read: Also, it may seem odd that Kirk didn’t consider Pennington’s FNS report when deciding what to tell the Mitchells, one can only assume that he felt the need for catharsis outweighed a desire to avoid repetition.)
  • Star Trek: My Brother’s Keeper, Book Two: Constitution
  • Star Trek: My Brother’s Keeper, Book Three: Enterprise
  • Vanguard #2: Summon the Thunder by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore
    (About a month after Harbinger.)
    2266

  • The Captain’s Table #6: Where Sea Meets Sky by Jerry Oltion
(“Where No Man…” was “just last year.”)
  • The Brave and the Bold: “The First Artifact” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
  • Star Trek: “Balance of Terror”
  • Star Trek: “Conscience of the King”
  • Enterprise Logs: “The Avenger”
    2267

  • 2950.3-2962.3—Star Trek #21: Uhura’s Song by Janet Kagan
    (Referenced by Ex Machina.)
  • 3497.2—Star Trek: “Friday’s Child”
  • Star Trek #79: Invasion! #1—First Strike by Diane Carey
  • 3486.1—Star Trek: “Who Mourns for Adonais?”
  • Star Trek: “Amok Time”
  • Star Trek: “The Doomsday Machine”
  • 4208.5—The Brave and the Bold: “First Interlude” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
    2269

  • Star Trek: “The Enterprise Incident”
  • 5462.1-5465.4—Section 31: Star Trek—Cloak by S.D. Perry
(This novel commences shortly after “The Enterprise Incident”; the epilogue, however, occurs two months after the bulk of the book.)
  • Star Trek: “Day of the Dove”
  • Star Trek: “That Which Survives”
  • Gateways #1: One Small Step by Susan Wright
  • Gateways #7: What Lay Beyond—“One Giant Leap” by Susan Wright
  • Star Trek: Twilight’s End
(This novel was referenced by “Ishtar Rising”. The closest it can be locked down temporally is after “Operation: Annihilate!” and before The Wounded Sky.)
  • 5001.1—Star Trek #2: The Entropy Effect by Vonda N. McIntyre
(Referenced by The Undiscovered Country and Ex Machina.)
    2270

  • Star Trek: Prime Directive by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens
(Talin IV referenced by “Grand Designs”.)
  • Star Trek #13: The Wounded Sky by Diane Duane
(Several characters in My Enemy, My Ally were introduced here.)
  • Star Trek #18: My Enemy, My Ally by Diane Duane
(A character from this book appears in “War Stories, Part I”.)
  • 7004.1—Star Trek: The Eugenics Wars—The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume One by Greg Cox
  • 7004.1-7004.2—Star Trek: The Eugenics Wars—The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume Two by Greg Cox
  • Star Trek #35: The Romulan Way by Diane Duane and Peter Morwood
(This novel is referenced by Catalyst of Sorrows as a work of fiction within the universe. The simplest solution would be to write off the discrepancies and timing problems as an artifact of that, much as can be done with Strangers from the Sky. However, that’s not the preferred solution.
(The story indicates that it should be eight years after “The Ultimate Computer”. However, that would place it in the post-TMP timeframe. Which would be fine, if the two sequels weren’t squarely in the TOS timeframe… which is more of a problem because they have a character from the non-continuous post-TMP Spock’s World in them.
(So, other books can’t be used as a good indicator. Hopefully the cleanup from the forthcoming The Bloodwing Voyages omnibus will clear this up; consider this location on the timeline as “pending” until I read TBV.)
  • Star Trek: The Lost Years by J.M. Dillard
(This story is reportedly contradicted by Ex Machina; originally included because of references to Traitor Winds in Rough Trails, it may or may not fit.)
  • 2270/12/14/1730EST-2270/01/01/0600 Starfleet Mean Time—Star Trek #70: Traitor Winds
(This was adjusted from 2269 to reflect changes in timing of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Referenced by Rough Trails.)
    2273

  • Enterprise Logs: “Night Whispers” by Diane Duane
  • 7412.6—Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • 7435.5-7447.5—Star Trek: Ex Machina by Christopher L. Bennett
  • Star Trek #47: The Kobayashi Maru by Julia Ecklar
(Even though this novel takes place after Ex Machina, it is perhaps better read beforehand.)
    2276

  • 8405.15—Star Trek #16: The Final Reflection by John M. Ford
(More than ten years have passed since the Organian Peace Treaty; I’m assuming that “Captain” references are for the same reason as in Spock’s World, namely, despite his Admiral’s rank Kirk is the Enterprise’captain.)
(Referenced by A Time for War, A Time for Peace and the I.K.S. Gorkon series.)
  • Star Trek #49: The Pandora Principle by Carolyn Clowes
(A race introduced here makes a later appearance in “Progress”. This placement assumes that Saavik was in command school in The Wrath of Khan—supported by her holding the rank of lieutenant, not ensign or cadet. Since Traitor Winds implies that the Starfleet post-graduate courses—or, at least, Command School and the Security Academy—are two-year courses, that would place this novel in 2278 at the latest. It could be earlier, if Saavik had at least one tour of duty between the Academy and Command School—and Wagon Train to the Stars forces it to be earlier, since this novel would take place during the Belle Terre preparations if it were in 2278. Choosing to place it two years earlier was an arbitrary conjecture.)
  • Sometime over the next two years, Kirk steps down from commanding the Enterprise and takes a post at the Admiralty per Wagon Train to the Stars.
    2279

  • 2279/01-2279/08—Star Trek #89: New Earth #1—Wagon Train to the Stars by Diane Carey
(This was adjusted from 2272 to reflect changes in timing of Star Trek: The Motion Picture; an additional adjustment was made to reflect Spock’s captaincy of the Enterprise, and to make times-in-grade for Chekov and Uhura hopefully more believable. The book picks up two months into the journey to Belle Terre.)
  • 2279/08—Star Trek #90: New Earth #2—Belle Terre by Dean Wesley Smith with Diane Carey
(Commences approximately two weeks after the end of Wagon Train to the Stars, and spans about nine days.)
  • c. 2279/10-c. 22/12—Star Trek #91: New Earth #3—Rough Trails by L.A. Graf
(Temporal references regarding Traitor Winds are faulty under both this and the original dating.)
    2280

  • Star Trek #89: New Earth #4—The Flaming Arrow by Kathy Oltion and Jerry Oltion
(Occurs two to three months after Rough Trails, as Chekov has departed.)
  • Star Trek #89: New Earth #5—Thin Air by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith
  • Star Trek #89: New Earth #6Challenger by Diane Carey
  • Gateways #2: Chainmail by Diane Carey
  • Gateways #7: What Lay Beyond—“Exodus” by Diane Carey
    2281

  • mid-2281—Enterprise returns
    2282

  • Kirk meets Antonia (per Star Trek Generations), presumably shortly after his retirement.
    2283

  • Enterprise Logs: “Just Another Little Training Cruise” by A.C. Crispin
    2284

  • Kirk returns to Starfleet, per Generations, accepting a post at the Academy.
  • 8083.6-8097.4—Star Trek: Strangers from the Sky by Margaret Wander Bonanno
(The novel which composes part of Strangers from the Sky is read by Captain Picard in A Time to Sow. As history did not record the events, who’s to say that Book II did not happen as shown?)
    2285

  • 8130.4—Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
(Certain elements of the novelization by Vonda N. McIntyre—including Saavik’s background—have been used in other works (“Just Another Little Training Cruise” among others). Thus, where it directly contradicts the movie, the movie takes precedence; otherwise, events are as depicted in the novel (as presented in the Signature Edition omnibus Duty, Honor, Redemption, which incorporates some of the changes made between script and screen).)
  • 8210.3—Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
(Please see the note for The Wrath of Khan.)
    2286

  • 8390—Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    2287

  • 8415.9—Star Trek: To Reign in Hell—The Exile of Khan Noonien Singh by Grex Cox
(Framing story; the bulk of the novel spans from 2267 to the beginning of The Wrath of Khan.)
  • 8454.1—Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
  • 8461.7—Star Trek #96: In the Name of Honor by Dayton Ward
    2293

  • Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
  • 9521.6—Star Trek #84: Assignment: Eternity by Greg Cox
(The frame story occurs during the final minutes of The Undiscovered Country.)
  • The Captain’s Table #1: War Dragons

(This novel commences approximately two weeks after Kirk’s death.)
    2294

    2295

    2298

  • The Lost Era 2298: The Sundered by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels

  • The Lost Era 2311: Serpents Among the Ruins by David R. George III
    2317

  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Iron and Sacrifice” by David R. George III
(The stories Demora tell take place in 2310 and 2315.)
    2320

  • Burning Dreams by Margaret Wander Bonanno
(There are three sets of stories in this book: a framing story set in 2320, a framing story set in 2267 shortly after “The Menagerie”, and stories being told in the 2267 frame.)
    2327

  • 14089.9-14093.4—Star Trek: Enter the Wolves written by A.C. Crispin and Howard Weinstein

  • 53771.3—Deep Space Nine: Mission: Gamma #2—This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman
(The given stardate of 53471.3 is inaccurate; 53771.3 is more likely.)
  • 53904.8-53909.2—Starfleet Corps of Engineers #25: “Home Fires”
(The given stardates of 53904.8-53909.2 are inaccurate; 53804.8-53809.2 are perhaps correct.)

  • Deep Space Nine: Mission: Gamma #4—Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson
  • Deep Space Nine: Rising Son by S.D. Perry
(This novel runs concurrently through the last several months; later I will attempt to break it down, but for now it will be placed here, where it rejoins the normal flow of time.)
  • 30 August—Deep Space Nine: Mission: Gamma #4—Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson—Epilogue
  • 1 September (53679.4)—Deep Space Nine: Unity by S.D. Perry—chapters 1-4, chapter 5 §1

  • New Frontier #12: Being Human by Peter David
  • New Frontier #13: Gods Above by Peter David
  • New Frontier #14: Stone and Anvil by Peter David
(These three, and the previous two Deep Space Nine novels, probably intersect; however, as each book follows directly from one to the next, it is simpler to leave them joined.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #31: “Ishtar Rising”, Book 1 of 2
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #32: “Ishtar Rising”, Book 2 of 2
(The given stardate of 53798.2 has been retconned out of continuity by the editor.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #33: “Collective Hindsight”, Book One
(The given stardates of 53851.3-53851.9 have been retconned out of continuity by the editor.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #34: “Collective Hindsight”, Book Two
(The given stardate of 53852.1 has been retconned out of continuity by the editor.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #35: “The Demon”, Book 1 of 2 by Randall N. Bills and Loren L. Coleman
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #36: “The Demon”, Book 2 of 2 by Randall N. Bills and Loren L. Coleman
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #37: “Ring Around the Sky” by Allyn Gibson
(Temporal references—including but not limited to “Relics” occuring eight years prior and the Dominion War having ended over a year ago—have been retconned out of continuity by the editor. At least one reference—that to The Soldiers of Fear occuring eight years ago—is faulty under both this and the original dating.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #38: “Orphans” by Kevin Killiany
    (Spans eighteen days * 17hours/24 hours = 12.75 days)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #39: “Grand Designs” by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore
  • 28 September (53679.4)—Deep Space Nine: Unity by S.D. Perry—chapter 24
  • 29 September (53679.4)—Deep Space Nine: Unity by S.D. Perry—chapter 25 and epilogue
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #40: “Failsafe” by David Mack
(The various temporal references—including but not limited to the story being at least four months after “Wildfire” and approximately a year after “Cold Fusion”—have been retconned out of continuity by the editor.)
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “The Officer’s Club” by Heather Jarman
(The story Kira tells likely occurs during the 2350s. Arguably, this story should occur there on its own, but I’ll accept the apparent intent indicated by the “Tending Bar…” segue pieces.)
  • 8-14 October, 53777.5-53779.6—Deep Space Nine: Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume Two—“Unjoined” by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin
  • 3-25 October—Deep Space Nine: Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume Two—“Fragments and Omens” by J. Noah Kym
(Though the timeline indicates that this story should start on 2 October, the passing of time indicated in the story would have it start on 3 October, assuming that 53779.6 is 14 October.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #41: “Bitter Medicine” by Dave Galanter
(The given stardate of 54101.9 has been retconned out of continuity by the editor.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #42: “Sargasso Sector” by Paul Kupperberg
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #43: “Paradise Interrupted” by John S. Drew

  • 1-10 November—Deep Space Nine: Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume One—“Paradigm” by Heather Jarman
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #45: “The Art of the Deal” by Glenn Greenberg

  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #49: “Small World” by David Mack
  • c. 53900—I.K.S. Gorkon #3: Enemy Territory by Keith R.A. DeCandido
  • 23-27 November—Starfleet Corps of Engineers #50: “Malefictorum” by Terri Osborne
(The Epilogue occurs after “Lost Time”, probably on 30 November.)
  • 29 November—Starfleet Corps of Engineers #51: “Lost Time” by Ilsa J. Bick
  • 8 December—Starfleet Corps of Engineers #52: “Identity Crisis” by John J. Ordover
  • 2 December—Deep Space Nine: Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume One—“The Lotus Flower” by Una McCormack

    (Tentative.)
  • Starfleet Corps of Engineers #56: “Wounds” #2 by Ilsa J. Bick
    (Tentative.)
  • 16-31 December—Deep Space Nine: Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume Three—“Olympus Descending” by David R. George III
    2377

  • January—Star Trek: Vulcan’s Soul, Book One—Exodus by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz
(Excepting, of course, the segments set in 2364 and in the distant past.)
  • 54103.7-54107.8 (March)—Star Trek: Vulcan’s Soul, Book Two—Exiles by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz
(Excepting, of course, the segments set in the distant past.)
  • Star Trek: Vulcan’s Soul, Book Three—Epiphany by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz
(Excepting, of course, the segments set in the distant past.)
  • Tales of the Captain’s Table: “Pain Management” by Peter David
(This story occurs after Chapter 1 of After the Fall. Its exact placement between Stone and Anvil and After the Fall is somewhat variable; After the Fall is “within a year or two”, plus several months time, after “Pain Management”.)
  • The Next Generation—The Genesis Wave, Volume One by John Vornholt
(This assumes that the details about the second Bajoran wormhole were published in a scientific journal of some sort, read by Dr. Marcus, allowing the intended reference to Mr. Vornholt’s Dominion War duology1 be interpreted as a reference to Millenium.)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation—The Genesis Wave, Volume Two by John Vornholt
  • The Next Generation: Genesis Force by John Vornholt
(Referenced by A Time for War, A Time for Peace. This novel spans the The Genesis Wave trilogy, and some time afterwards.)
  • 13 October 2377 (10 Tishrei 6138)—Tales of the Captain’s Table: “An Easy Fast” by John J. Ordover
(This story’s rather undatable. It’s implied but not explicitly stated that the story occurs not during the Dominion War; 2376 is too crowded for it to occur there; thus, this is the earliest that I believe it can occur.)
    2378

  • Voyager: Homecoming by Christie Golden
  • Voyager: The Farther Shore by Christie Golden
  • Voyager: Spirit Walk, Volume One—Old Wounds by Christie Golden
(Commences approximately six months after The Farther Shore.)
  • Voyager: Spirit Walk, Volume Two—Enemy of My Enemy by Christie Golden
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Seduced” by Christie Golden
(The frame story could occur at any point after The Farther Shore; placing it after Enemy of My Enemy makes the most sense as it maintains release order. The story Chakotay tells occurs in 2344, immediately prior to his flashbacks in “Tattoo”, per the OkudaChron. Arguably, this story should occur there on its own, but I’ll accept the apparent intent indicated by the “Tending Bar…” segue pieces.
(Also, certain uniform descriptions would indicate a date no sooner than 2355 for when the story he tells occurs; however, the characters’ age—more important to the story—provides a better idea of the authors intent for this timing.)
  • 8-23 October—A Time to be Born
(The month was changed from May as this has been confirmed as an editorial mixup by KRAD.)
  • 23 October-???A Time to Die
  • A Time to Sow
  • A Time to Harvest
    2379

  • A Time to Love by Robert Greenberger
  • A Time to Hate by Robert Greenberger

  • 56844.9—Star Trek: Nemesis
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Improvisations on the Opal Sea: A Tale of Dubious Credibility” by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels
(The story Riker tells occurs shortly before the framing story, and after Nemesis. Despite the title, various points made from Riker’s POV indicate that the credibility isn’t overly dubious, at least with regards to his fellow crewmembers’ violations of local law through use of technology.)
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “Darkness” by Michael Jan Friedman
(The story Picard tells occurs in 2355. Arguably, this story should occur there on its own, but I’ll accept the apparent intent indicated by the “Tending Bar…” segue pieces.)
  • Tales from the Captain’s Table: “loDnI’pu” vavpu’ je” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
  • Death in Winter by Michael Jan Friedman
  • 56941.1-57023.3—December-8 January 2380—Titan: Taking Wing by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels
(Chapter 1 occurs on 56828.8, concurrent with the opening scenes of Star Trek: Nemesis.)
    2380

  • January—Titan: The Red King by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin
  • January-December—Articles of the Federation by Keith R. A. DeCandidio
  • February—Titan: Orion’s Hounds by Christopher L. Bennett
    c. 2407

  • The Next Generation: Imzadi by Peter David
(The events depicted in this story are from an alternate timeline, and may or may not resemble the actual events of this time period. However, the “past” of the story is a part of this timeline.)
    In the twenty-fifth century….

  • Deep Space Nine: Prophecy and Change edited by Marco Palmieri
  • Tales of the Dominion War: “Stone Cold Truths” by Peter David

The following titles cannot be included in this timeline, as they directly contradict aspects of other titles.
